What’s a Food Bank?

What’s a food bank?

A FoodBank is a big warehouse that collects food and then makes sure it gets to people who are hungry.

Where do they get the food?

They ask people who have a lot of food to give some of it to the FoodBank.  They ask grocery stores, restaurants, schools and families to give food. The FoodBank then collects all the donated food in a warehouse.

What do they do with the food in the warehouse?

The FoodBank gives the donated food to places like food pantries and soup kitchens. Food pantries and soup kitchens give the food to people who are hungry.

What’s a food pantry?

Many churches and synagogues run food pantries. A food pantry keeps food in a closet or small room.  People who need it come to the pantry to get boxes or bags of food which they cook or eat at home.

What’s a soup kitchen?

A soup kitchen is a dining room where people who are hungry come to eat for free. The FoodBank gives the food and volunteers cook the food.

Why are people hungry?

People are hungry because they don’t have enough money to buy food.

Why don’t people have enough money?

Some people can’t buy enough food because the work they do doesn’t pay them enough.  Some people can’t earn money because they are sick and can’t work. Some people have to take care of others all day and can’t go to work.  Children with parents who don’t have enough money may be hungry.
