Food Drive TIPS

TAKE A STAND AGAINST HUNGER

boyThere’s lots of creative things you do with food drives. You can

* Create competitions where people win a small prize for different categories - largest individual donation, most protein, or match your weight with pounds of food.

*Have Macaroni Mondays, Tuna Tuesdays, or a Peanut Butter Week to encourage donations of high protein foods.

* Grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends, may want to get involved by donating money to your food drive. Donations of money go far at the FoodBank – for every dollar, we can distribute 3 meals to hungry kids and their families.

* Encourage schools, departments, teams or classes to challenge each other to a competition of who can collect the most food.

* If you love sports, get your team involved. For example:
Baseball – BIG or little league - Strike Out Hunger
Pop Warner Football - Tackle Hunger
Basketball - Dunk Hunger

Other ideas:

Set a goal: Tell everyone how many pounds of food you want to raise before you start. You might think about your goal in terms of a certain number of pounds per person. Report your progress to everyone regularly.

Kick-Off Party: Bring your classmates or friendss together for a kick-off party to announce goals, prizes and other food drive details.

Give a Take Home Brown Bag: Provide a brown bag for people to take home. Attach a flyer with specific instructions about what you want them to do. Assign someone to distribute the bags to everyone. This could work particularly well over a weekend when people are more likely to forget to bring food.

Do Weekly drawing/prize: Each time people bring in a bag full of food, give them a ticket for a drawing of a prize. You can ask your parents for ideas about a prize. The more food they bring in, the more opportunity for them to win.

Celebrate your success!
Share your story with us and we may just post it on our website. Tell us, so we can tell others what works.

And, don’t forget the pictures. We’d love to have them in our photo gallery!!

Host a party rewarding the winners with humorous prizes; take pictures and ask your parents to include them in their company newsletters or just share them with everyone. Be sure to honor everyone -- each pound of food provides a meal for one person so everyone makes a difference!
