through 275+ community food programs.

ABOUT THE FOODBANK of Monmouth and
Ocean Counties
WHAT: The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean
Counties (FBMOC) is an emergency food-distribution center that provides over 4
million pounds of food to people in need throughout Monmouth and Ocean Counties.
WHERE: 3300 Route 66, Neptune, NJ
INCLUDES: The 43,000 sq. ft. facility includes a warehouse, sorting room, refrigeration and
freezer units, meeting rooms, offices, greenhouse, garden, and “teaching”
kitchen.
FOUNDED: 1984 in Spring Lake; moved to Neptune in 2001.
MEMBER: FBMOC is a member of Chicago-based Feeding America, the nation’s foodbank network.
FOOD COMES FROM: The FoodBank collects donated and surplus food from many sources including: supermarkets, grocery stores, businesses and individuals, commodities from the United States Department of Agriculture, and a small co-op program also passes on the savings from bulk purchases. In addition, monies from the New Jersey State Food Purchase Program buys food specifically needed, such as cereal, milk, eggs and fresh produce in the summer.
FOOD GOES TO: Families in
crisis, children and the elderly receive emergency food. 43% are working poor with too little income
and over 35% are unemployed or homeless and are suffering from an emergency or
family crisis. Over 70,000 individuals
receive emergency food. The FoodBank distributes the food through a network of
275 charities including food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and other
hunger relief organizations.
OTHER PROGRAMS: The Culinary Training Program,
addressing poverty as a root cause of hunger, is an intensive 13 week training
in culinary arts that leads participants to certification, job readiness and
placement in better-paid jobs. The
culinary students also prepare and deliver daily hot meals to 100 at risk
children at a local after school educational and recreation program.
Food Stamp Outreach Program: To help families obtain as much food
assistance as they can, the FoodBank pre-screens clients for food stamps and
provides assistance in all aspects of the application process.
